Everyone knows how to do something. Whether it's painting, making greeting cards, carpentry, knitting, riding a Harley, or caring for a giant lizard...we've all acquired certain skills in our lives, and it's only right that we should want to share the results of our hobby and also share what we've learned about how to do it.

I'm a writer. I didn't know I was a writer until one night I started an e-mail that became a book. The e-mail was to a Yankee from New York who tried to imitate a southern accent. He didn't understand southerners, and he certainly didn't understand southern words. I started the e-mail to let him know it was okay to say "fixin to." The e-mail got longer, and early every morning I added more to it. In thirty days, I had a story.

Mrs. Jimmie Cole, my former English teacher, encouraged me to keep writing. Betsy Donovan, a good friend and "free advice" editor, badgered me until I filled in more detail. In eight months, I had expanded and edited so much, that it became a book -- 200 pages.

The Gold Club trial was on television during the time I was writing, so it's no wonder my characters were pimps, prostitutes, gamblers, and the so-called Dixie Mafia.

I had the book published through Writers Club Press at iUniverse, and the next thing I knew, I had signed books for four hours with no break. So now you can see how easy it was to become a "writer." I've included lots of pictures of the book signing, and you can see how much fun I'm having.

"The Big Diamond" chapter inspired me to write the following poem.

The Booster

He was a thief in the night, they say.
Sometimes he was one by day.
Such a tall and elegant man,
It was difficult to see how he stole and ran.

Eighteen years old, a young man sent to prison,
At thirty, my how he had risen.
In a world of scams and shams,
He was shrewd enough not to get into jams.

It was obvious that he had good taste,
By the alpaca sweaters stolen in haste.
Shopping Centers were his pastime,
Jewelry stores, and then the crime.

Through the door, into the mall,
Run to the car, don't take a fall.
Heartbeat fast, adrenaline flowing,
Diamond in hand, time to be going.

In His Corner:
Will the Real Billy Joe Please Stand

The story of Billy Joe Billingsley, a troubled teenager who grew up to be a full-fledged criminal, and Jane Moss, his constant companion. Jane closed her eyes to Billy Joe's activities until the FBI stepped in. Their journey takes you from Atlanta to Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas, and other southern states where the so-called Dixie Mafia flourished in the late 1960s. Billy Joe and Jane had one common thread -- their hometown of Overton.

Billy Joe, a true Southern gentleman, would be penalized forever for one mistake he made in his youth. Not only was he penalized by the people in the small town of Overton, Billy Joe penalized himself. He thought he was unworthy of their trust and friendship.

Jane's top priority was her job. Her only other interests were shoes, clothes, and where she would wear them -- until the night she bumped into Billy Joe. Throughout the city of Atlanta in 1967, hippies were wandering the streets with their soulmates. Jane was no hippie, but she knew a soulmate when she saw one, and Billy Joe was definitely hers. It was obvious that Billy Joe felt the same towards Jane.

North to Alaska

My nephew Jay, his wife Kristy and two daughters, moved to Alaska in 2004 where Jay worked at the University of Alaska in Fairbanks as Land Resources Agent for the Extension Indian Reservation Program administered through Tanana Chiefs Conference. Kristy and the girls flew up a month after Jay and my brother Dan made the trip, taking the scenic tour.
